Charlotte Catholic 3, West Iredell 2
Charlotte Catholic eked out a two-point win in the decisive fifth game Saturday to beat West Iredell 3-2 in the fourth round of the 3A state playoffs.
The teams traded victories in the first four games, with Charlotte Catholic winning the first and third game 25-22 and 27-25, and the Warriors winning games two and four 25-21 and 25-20.
But Charlotte Catholic (24-5), the top seed from the Mega-7 Conference, pulled out a 17-15 win in the fifth game to advance to the West Regional final, where it will play either Hickory or West Henderson.
"I had all the confidence in my girls, and they played their hearts out," West Iredell coach Krystle Miller said. "It just wasn't our night."
Anna Johnson led the Warriors with 19 kills, 14 digs and three aces, and Paige Courson added 15 kills and three blocks.
Setter Jordan Ostwalt directed West Iredell's offense with 56 assists, and Amy Deal (eight digs, seven kills) and Tess Sigmon (13 kills, nine digs, six blocks) also played well for the Warriors.
West Iredell, the North Piedmont Conference champion, finished the season with a 22-2 record.
