Statesville's boys soccer team claimed a share of the North Piedmont 3A title with last week's 4-3 thriller over West Iredell.
Even more importantly, though, the Greyhounds later learned they would not have a playoff match to determine the No. 1 seed.
According to the N.C. High School Athletic Association guidelines for breaking ties, the Greyhounds will get the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, and all the comes with it.
Statesville and North Iredell both finished 10-2 in NPC play and split the season series. West Iredell finished third in the conference.
The Greyhounds went 2-0 against West this year while North Iredell went 1-1. By virtue of that record, Statesville gets the nod.
As the No. 1 seed, Statesville opens the playoffs at home Wednesday against the No. 4 seed from the South Piedmont Conference, likely Concord (9-7-1).
More importantly, Statesville — should it keep winning — would stay at home throughout the West Regional.
It's quite an accomplishment for a team that started the NPC season with a stunning loss to Carson.
"We've just been working so hard," Greyhounds coach Gordon Palmer said. "There's no quit in us. We started slow at the beginning of the season and got down on ourselves. But we came back, we fought back and I'm really proud of our guys."
