Girl's birthday wish: Help animals

Six-year-old Olivia Sheheen loves animals and has several pets, from dogs to a frog.
When she recently talked to her mother, Kimberly, about plans for her sixth birthday party, it was natural she would think about animals.
"She wanted to ask her friends to bring food and things for the animals," Kimberly Sheheen said.
Sheheen said her daughter was planning to have about 40 kids at her pool party, and she encouraged them to bring gifts for the animals in foster care with the Humane Society.
Sheheen said she was surprised by the outpouring from her daughter's friends. They brought dog and cat food, toys, beds and more than $200 in cash and gift cards.
On Saturday, Sheheen drove Olivia to the Humane Society's Adoption Center on Robinson Road in Mooresville to deliver the goodies.
The entire cargo area of the Sheheen family's sport utility vehicle was filled with everything from small cans of cat food to a pink dog bed.
Volunteers from the Humane Society helped Olivia carry in the goodies.
Olivia handed over an envelope with the gift cards and cash to HSI volunteer Megan Mayhew.
Olivia, who was a little shy when asked about what she did to help the dogs and cats at the Humane Society, had a big smile on her face.
"I love all animals," she said.
The food and supplies will be used to take care of the dogs and cats in foster care through the Humane Society and the money and gift cards will be used to purchase additional supplies.
The Humane Society currently has about 26 cats and 31 dogs in its program, and most are being taken care of by foster parents.
Humane Society Executive Director Juli Reed thanked Olivia for her concern and compassion for animals.
"The animals really really need friends like you," she told the girl.
