Robert Howard once fought his way back to recover from injuries he suffered in a serious wreck when he was 18 years old.
Now, he's trying to battle back from a second serious collision — which occurred Wednesday afternoon as he slowed to turn his motorcycle at a convenience store on N.C. Highway 90 at the Iredell-Alexander county line.
Howard was just a short ride from his Stony Point home when his motorcycle was rear-ended and then run over by a Toyota Tundra pickup truck and dragged several feet.
First responders, family and friends jumped into action, helping stabilize the truck and pulling Howard out.
He was rushed to a Carolinas Medical Center helicopter, which landed near the Stony Point Fire Department.
Howard was listed in critical condition on Thursday.
One of his sons witnessed the crash from the parking lot of the convenience store.
Michael Howard said his father was involved in a serious crash at the age of 18, and suffered extensive injuries.
But he loved riding his motorcycle, and was out for a ride on a new bike when the crash occurred.
Trooper M.J. Goudelock of the N.C. Highway Patrol said the driver of the truck, Tony Lynn Wilson Jr. of Hudson, saw the motorcycle slowing to turn, but realized he wasn't going to be able to stop.
"He hit the rear of the motorcycle, and the truck overrode the motorcycle," Goudelock said.
Wilson was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, the trooper said.
