Vikings baseball falls just short

In the playoffs for the first time since 1995, South Iredell's baseball team stood toe-to-toe with a deeper, 20-win team before losing 3-0 last week.

The Vikings' loss to West Davidson came, in essence, off one pitch — a three-run homer.

"(Chris) Dula absolutely just carved those guys up left and right," Vikings coach Trey Ramsey said. "He did a great job to only give up four hits against a No. 1 seed. Three of their hits were slow rollers through the infield.

"I hate the way it happened in that we got beat on one pitch."

South Iredell's offense collected three hits in Saturday's game, two coming from Dillon Harris.

The Vikings had trouble against West Davidson's left-handed pitcher, though.

"We hadn't seen a lefty of that caliber since we saw Lake Norman (in early March)," Ramsey said. "We worked for four days on opposite-field approach, how to get a lead with a left hander on the mound ... I guess it just wasn't enough time."

The Vikings finished the season 10-13 and will return several key players as they move into a new conference next year.
