Carly Couch will be South Iredell's lone representative at Friday's 2A state championship.
The Vikings, though, had several close calls at last week's 2A Midwest Regional.
With the top four performers in each event advancing to the state meet, the Vikings finished fifth in three events.
Senior Michael Clarke finished fifth in two events, the long jump and 100-meter dash, to narrowly miss a trip to states.
The closest call, though, was Tatanina Smith in the girls shot put.
She had a toss of 32 feet, 9 inches — the fourth distance was 32 feet, 9.5 inches.
Couch will take part in the 800-meter run, where she is — coincidentally — seeded fifth out of 16 runners.
