A combination of following a hunch and good luck led to the arrest of a man authorities said stole a riding lawn mower in late April.

An Iredell County man reported his Husqvarna riding mower stolen April 27.

Detective Sgt. Mark Nicholson of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said the man indicated the mower was taken sometime during the night.

He told Nicholson that Christopher Allison, formerly of Union Grove, had been at his house and was driving a pickup truck that contained ramps for loading equipment.

On Tuesday, Nicholson and Detective Sgt. Joel Hepler contacted Allison's probation officer and learned Allison had moved to Lenior.

The detectives then decided to go to Caldwell County and talk with Allison.

Nicholson said they missed the turn to Allison's driveway, and looked in the rearview mirror to see him mowing his yard with a Husqvarna mower.

After seeing the detectives, Allison tried to avoid them by mowing into some bushes, Nicholson said.
Allison told them he bought the mower from a cousin for $150.

Nicholson said it had been painted and the hood was missing. Allison told Nicholson the hood was missing when he bought it. Nicholson later found the missing hood in an area under Allison's house.

As a result, Allison was charged by Caldwell County authorities with possession of stolen goods and Nicholson said he plans to charge him with felony larceny.

The mower was returned to the owner.
