There are a lot of people who will offer the opposite view. When they hear you "just" have boys, they'll shake their heads a little sadly and say, "there's just something special about having a daughter. You'll miss out on so many things. Are you going to keep trying for a girl?"
Not that it's any of their business, but, no, I'm not. I happen to like being the mom of boys and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.
I'm hopeful that, just like the moms I talked to last weekend, I will figure out the complicated world of boys as I go along, growing and learning right along with my boys.
Yes, I know we'll probably never go shopping at the mall on a Saturday afternoon — at least, not for fun. But there are so many other things we've already learned we like to do together — bike riding, jogging, watching movies, going bowling, playing video games — that it seems to me we've got the basis for good relationships that can survive even the dreaded teenage years.
One of the mothers I spoke with last weekend said she'd learned to like Ultimate Fighting, heading out to watch it every couple of weeks with her husband and boys. They eat wings, pick their favorites and just hang out together.
Ultimate fighting might be a stretch for me, but I'm pretty sure my boys and I can find some common ground where we can all play.
