Mooresville's boys track and field team has piled up big win after big win over the past two years.
They Blue Devils are still winning, but they got a stiff test from East Rowan in a four-team meet last week.
Mooresville's 89 team points was enough to win, but the Mustangs were fewer than seven points behind in second place.
"Oh yeah, it was definitely the closest in a while," Devils coach Brad Baker said. "East Rowan had a hurdler that just came out of the woodwork, and he was fast. Then they had a pole vaulter that jumped 14-6. It was tight."
A tight meet may have been what Mooresville needed, too.
The two-time defending state champions have rarely been challenged during their time as the state's best and have new faces in major events.
"I think it's a good thing," Baker said. "It rejuvenates our kids, it lets them see there are people shooting for them every day. They know they can't take a day off."
CARRYING THEMSELVES WELL
A pair of athletes has led Mooresville's girls track team to success as well.
Senior Clair Powell, who ran cross country for the first time last fall, has the distance events locked down. She's qualified for regionals in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Versatile Aisha Cannon has made an impact as well.
"Aisha does just about everything for us," Baker said. "She's on a relay team that is going to regionals.
"She's already qualified in all three jumps, and she may have qualified for 200. She's already qualified for five events at regionals after three meets, and the maximum you can do is four."
TOUGH STRETCH OVER
Ranked No. 10 in the state among 3A teams at the end of last week, the girls soccer team is 0-3-1 in its last four games.
Take a look at the schedule, though.
Mooresville lost 2-1 to both No. 2 Lake Norman and No. 5 Northwest Cabarrus. It also lost 2-0 to much-improved Statesville and tied 4A North Meck 1-1.
Mooresville won't play another ranked team until April 20.
HALFWAY DONE
Jordan Shoaf is holding up his end of the deal as the Blue Devils' top golfer.
Halfway through the North Piedmont 3A season, Shoaf is tied for 10th place individually in the conference.
Daniel Brannon is also in the top-15 for Mooresville, which is fourth in the conference as a team.
