The YMCA of Iredell County's Board of Directors was so impressed with the job Marcheta Campbell was doing as interim CEO that it has dropped the word interim from her title.

Chairman Scott Rankin said the board officially suspended its nationwide search to replace CEO Tip Nicholson in February and offered Campbell the job.

Campbell knows the community and the staff at the Barium Springs, Statesville and Alexander County branches, Rankin said.

"She was always at the top of the list," he said. "She had everything we were looking for."

Campbell began working at the YMCA of Iredell County in 1989 as the Summer Day Camp director after graduating from Appalachian State University.

In July of that year, Nicholson went to Fort Dobbs, where the day camps were being held, and offered her a full-time position as program director.

Since then, she's held a number of positions with the YMCA of Iredell County and other branches. Campbell said she had similar CEO experience in the late 1990s, when she worked at YMCA of Dyers County in Dyersburg, Tenn.

"I'm very comfortable with the role," she said. "It's obviously a great opportunity. I was actually thrilled and very humbled when they told me that news."

Campbell said she isn't afraid to ask questions or learn new things.

Rankin said the board was impressed with her ability to manage expenses and put the YMCA on strong footing despite the recession.

Campbell said an important goal for her and her staff is to continue concentrating on families and fitness.

"We feel like we have the opportunity to educate people so they can change their lives and make better choices," she said. "Just being there as a support system."
