Status updates keep me posted

Thanks to Facebook, I'm learning all sorts of things.

The best friend I lost touch with after college is about to have her first baby and doesn't live very far away.

The guy I dated in high school is living the single life in L.A. and still plays in a band.

And the girl who used to pass me hilarious notes in class in grammar school is still making me laugh with her posts.

I've figured out who got married, who got divorced and who finally decided it was time to grow up.

I've been on the site about two months and, like most of my friends, I'm now hooked.

It's like instant gratification in some ways. An old memory will flit through my mind, and five minutes later I'm looking at photos of that person's past and present and trading "what have you been up to for the last 20 years" e-mails.

But Facebook can also be frustrating. Why is Brannon counting down to D-Day? I don't know! He hasn't updated his status, so I'm left to think the worst. And what did Julie mean with the cryptic "my life just got complicated." It's been a week, and I still don't quite know the answer to that one.

It can also be mundane. As much as I love my friends, I'm not sure I need a flurry of posts around 5:30 p.m. about what everyone's cooking for dinner. Who knew Laura liked tacos so much?
And, at times, it can be overwhelming. Under the category of way-too-much-information, if your status update contains a reference to a bodily function, it might be best to hit clear.

But the best thing I've learned since being on Facebook is that I have more great friends than I realized. Those people I'd lost touch with over years, but never stopped caring about — turns out they felt the same way.

And now, when I have Laura over for dinner one day soon, I'll know to make tacos.
