Mom loosens up on snowy night

It was almost 10 p.m. and the snow had been falling for about an hour. The boys watched through the window for a while, noses pressed to chilly glass.

Then Josh turned with a grin and asked "Can we go out and play?"

Of course, I said no. It was late, it was dark and it was very cold.

They turned back to the window, and started to plot the fun they'd have the next day. Snowball fights, snowmen, sledding — they had a full agenda planned.

Listening to them, I somehow remembered what it felt like to be a kid and see winter's first real snowfall. It was like Christmas and magic and Disney World all rolled into one.

"Get your coats and gloves and go outside and play," I said.

At first, they just stared at me, probably wondering what had happened to their real mom.
Then they burst into action. Jammies were quickly traded for snow clothes, mismatched gloves were pulled on and they were out the door.

The fun only lasted a few minutes. Josh smacked Ben in the face with a huge snowball, which led to tears, and two frozen little boys came trooping back inside.

I had mugs of hot cocoa waiting, and as they thawed out, I got to bask in the feeling of — for once — being the cool mom who lets her kids play outside in the snow at night.
