For Markus White, owning her first home can never come too late in life.
A brief dedication ceremony for White was held Sunday afternoon to dedicate her Habitat for Humanity home.
White's home is the 59th home built by the local Habitat affiliate and will be one of the 15 homes built in Statesville's Fourth Creek Village.
This will be the first home White has owned. She has rented for 45 years.
"It's a blessing from the Lord," she said.
White, 66, will live in the 1,000-square foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom home by herself.
The dedication ceremony was attended by Habitat staff, volunteers, board members and White's family.
During the ceremony, Sally Nix, director of development, handed White the key to her new home, which she will start moving into this week.
The Statesville native put in an application for a Habitat home after the owner of her former home passed away and the family sold it.
She has since been living with her daughter.
White used to live near a Habitat home, so she thought she'd apply and see what would come of it.
The end result, she said, was made possible by God.
"It's strange He would wait this late in my life, but I will glorify Him," she said. "He made it possible."
Her granddaughter, Moriah Pohoski, 16, will stay with White sometimes. She said it feels good to see her grandmother own a home.
"I'm happy for her," she said.
It is clear White takes great pride in her new home, and went the extra mile to see that hers and other Habitat homes were built.
She put in 200 additional "sweat equity" hours than what is required of homeowners.
According to Executive Director Scott Loudermelt, volunteers will begin construction on the fourth Habitat home in Fourth Creek on July 20.
Having dedicated White's home and a home to Narissa Wood on Saturday is a great feeling.
"It always makes us feel good because there are a lot of people going to bed tonight in substandard housing," he said. "This is a small victory."
