Hoping to create a sustainable food garden to help feed people in need, Mooresville's First Baptist Church took its project one step further.

Members planted their faith side-by-side with vegetables in a cross-shaped garden.

Built on the church grounds near the corner of Church Street and Center Avenue, the FBC raised-bed garden contains a variety of vegetables – from cucumbers and tomatoes to beans, okra and peppers.

Church members hope the garden will feed many financially-burdened fellow members and others in the community, said Carol Mitcham.

It was Mitcham and several other members of FBC's "All Things In Common" (ATIC) team who decided in March "to share their blessings with their members and the Mooresville community."

"When discussions began about having a garden, (FBC member) Frank Meadows stated that he had a dream that it should be in the shape of a cross to symbolize our faith-based commitment," Mitcham said.
Several 10-inch wide telephone poles frame the colorful garden, forming the cross' perimeter and creating a large symbol of the members' faith.
In partnership with the Mooresville Christian Mission, Mitcham said the church used weekly offerings, yard sales and other vegetable gardens to help raise some fund toward creating the garden.
Additionally, she noted, Adam and Bobby Brawley of Brawley Seed Co. donated seeds, plants, top soil and other items necessary to accomplish the FBC's goal of supplying its members fresh vegetables.
FBC also maintains a potato patch, located on a church member's farm on Wiggins Road. Mitcham said many rows of Irish and sweet potatoes have been planted and will aid greatly in feeding those requiring assistance.
Added Mitcham, "To date, approximately 65 pounds of fresh vegetable have been distributed and the ATIC team is gearing up for a large potato harvest in a few weeks."
