Old medical records were used to start a blaze Saturday evening in the old Davis Hospital building on West End Avenue.

Capt. David Onley of the Statesville Police Department said someone piled the medical records in the floor in the basement of the hospital building and set them on fire.

Statesville Assistant Fire Marshal Ed Hodges said it appears transients were living in the building at various times and could be responsible for starting the fire.

Hodges said there was very little damage to the building, but firefighters were busy at the structure for several hours Saturday.
