Motorists should be careful when trying to pass tractors

Published: June 2, 2009

I am writing this letter to address a serious problem I have observed since taking a part in our family's farm.

We have two tracts of land in Eastern Iredell County. Sometimes it is necessary to drive a tractor back and forth between the two farms. Usually, my 17-year-old son, who loves to farm, drives the tractor and I always follow behind in a vehicle with my emergency flashers on. Whenever he prepares to make a left turn, I turn off my flashers, turn my left turn signal on, and both my son and I hold our arms straight out to the left to give an additional turn signal.

On three different occasions in the past two months, someone has tried to pass us as we are making the left turn. On Saturday, I had to pull in front of an idiot to keep him from hitting the tractor as he tried to pass when my son was turning.

Do people not realize what an arm straight out to the left signals? Do they not teach this in driver's ed anymore? Please, respect the few farmers that are left out there.

And, please, remember the next time you are hurrying down the road behind a slow tractor that someone loves that tractor driver. Please do not endanger their lives!
