Iredell County Commissioner Scott Keadle wants all meetings involving him and his colleagues to be tape recorded.
As it is now, only the regular meetings that are held in the commissioners chambers are video recorded and broadcast on cable television and via the county's Web site.
But Keadle said he wants all gatherings that could be classified under state law as official meetings to be at least audio recorded.
"I just think everything should be on record," Keadle said. "I think that just makes good sense. And there's just no reason, that 40 years after we put a man on the moon, we can't get a commissioners' meeting recorded."
Keadle made the request to both County Manager Joel Mashburn and Jean Moore, the clerk to the Board of Commissioners.
Mashburn said there's been no reason in particular that meetings in less formal settings — such as the budget reviews, pre-agenda meetings and executive or closed-session meetings — have not been recorded.
"It's just something we normally have not done," Mashburn said. "But I don't think it's an unreasonable request and it's not something that would be difficult to do."
It would also not cost anything to audio record gatherings held in the commissioners smaller meeting room inside the Iredell County Government Center, Mashburn said, because the county already has the required equipment.
Mashburn said future meetings could even be be video recorded if that is what the board wants.
