The search for an overdue boater from Statesville continued today off the coast of Carteret County.

Michael Dodick, 67, left the Anchorage Marina in Atlantic Beach about 5:30 a.m. Thursday for a fishing trip and has not returned, the Coast Guard said.

Dodick, who was fishing alone in his 28-foot Grady White boat, planned to travel to a fishing spot known as the Big Rock, which is located 42 miles offshore, according to Lt.j.g. Scott Hembrook.

He was due back about 4 p.m. and has not been heard from. Dodick's fiancee notified the Coast Guard when he did not return, and a search began by air and sea around 6 p.m.

The search efforts have included rescue boats from Station Fort Macon, Cutter Block Island and helicopters and C-130 planes from Elizabeth City.

Hembrook said the Coast Guard had not received any radio or other communication from Dodick and planes had not picked up any signals from an emergency position indicating radio beacon.

Dodick filed a float plan before leaving, which provided information on his plans. It is uncertain what type of communication equipment he has on the boat.
