Folks who live near the old Sigmon Septic Tank site off Eufola Road near Troutman have every right to be more than a little worried.
Their homes are in close proximity to the remnants of a real environmental cesspool.
The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources deemed the site a health risk in 1995, three years after the waste storage business closed up.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been involved with the site for five years, monitoring the presence of waste materials and chemical contaminants from the site that have found their way into the nearby water tables.
Nearby residents are obviously concerned about the lingering effects of this hazardous site. They want to know what they have been exposed to and when, if ever, the water will be safe to drink.
The EPA will hold a meeting from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Celeste Henkel Elementary School to report on the current state of the site and receive the public's ideas for additional cleanup efforts.
This is an opportunity for those who care about the environment to be seen and heard.
