A Statesville woman was injured in a multi-vehicle accident on US Interstate 40 on Wednesday afternoon as a result of a cardboard box flying out of a man's truck.
Morganton's Danny Velez was driving westbound on I-40 when a box flew out of his Chevrolet pickup truck and landed in the roadway near U.S. Highway 70 in Hickory, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Velez pulled over to the median and his passenger, Curtis White of Nebo, went to retrieve the box.
As White was picking up the box, Narlene Johnson, who was driving a Suzuki, stopped in the left lane and Jesse Cox, who was driving a Freightliner truck, stopped in the right lane.
Betty Billington of Statesville, who was approaching the stopped vehicles, failed to reduce her speed in time and sideswiped Johnson's vehicle and rear-ended Cox's truck, authorities said.
Velez was cited with failure to secure a load, according to the Highway Patrol. Billington was cited with failing to reduce speed.
According to a Frye Regional Medical Center spokeswoman, Billington and Johnson were treated and released at the hospital.
