Carmen Metcalf and Elizabeth Walker decided to start the Carolina Women's Travel Club after realizing that even though they were in the travel business, they weren't taking time to enjoy themselves.

"Coming off the holidays, you've done stuff for everyone else and you are spent," Walker said. "We do everything for everybody and we don't give for ourselves."

Walker and Metcalf both work in the wholesale travel business. They know women whose husbands hate to travel and others just need a buddy to go along with them to the Outer Banks sometimes.

"I've never been to the Outer Banks," Walker said. "It's been years since I've been to the Biltmore."

The club will be holding three Dutch dinner meetings in the next two weeks to see who is interested in joining and where they want to go.

The two women already have a long list of ideas of their own and have posted them on the club's Web site, Carolinawomentravelclub.com. The ideas range from cooking schools in Italy to North Carolina winery tours.

The group will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Statesville Golden Coral. On Jan. 27, the group will hold a meeting at Fat Boys in Mooresville at the same time.

If you can't make it to those meetings, they are also meeting on Jan. 29 at Midtown Sundries on Harris Boulevard in Charlotte.

Metcalf said the group isn't just for single young women, either. The group is hoping to see women of all ages and all walks of life at these meetings.

"It would be a great platform to meet other people in this area," Metcalf said.

Walker said they are hoping club members will form real bonds and spend time with each other even when they aren't traveling.

"There are some nights when you get home and say, 'There is stuff I have to do, but I would like to go and shop,' " she said.
