Music marathon planners need help breaking world record

Published: February 25, 2009

Music calms the savage soul! Statesville's Signal Hill Mall will be the site of 252 consecutive hours of live music beginning March 19.

Ten days later the Guinness World Record will be owned by Statesville instead of Hungary. This world record is for continuous music by multiple artists in one location for the longest time! What an event! Help make this fantasy a reality. What a notch for Statesville to acquire this record. It's also now become a competition. Detroit is in on the act and begins its attempt at beating us one day after we begin.

Help from our community is desperately needed. Musicians of all kinds are needed: singers, bands, school bands, choirs, hand bell teams, choirs, garage bands, daycare/elementary groups — you name it, we need it. We also need volunteers to help staff this event during the 252 hours. Janet Harriman created a Web site for this purpose. Go to: www.unitedwayofiredell.org or www.statesvilleworldrecord.org and register to perform or volunteer. This is also a fundraiser for our local United Way.

We need Jim Calabrese, Meg Ingle-Cheek, Senior Serenaders, and Jarrod Hammons but they must register first. Ted Hawkins, Mark Kano and Jameel Jahmay have already registered.

Musicians from Greensboro, High Point, Tennessee and Virginia have registered. When are you going to register? This event is in Statesville, but we will take performers from anywhere to enjoy the satisfaction of playing and listening to great music.
