I was raised with a "redneck" type of influence and even as a child it felt completely stupid, but the fact is people say stupid things.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a literary work of art. To change how it is read rewrites what we have learned from reading it. History has taught us that the n-word had way too much power and I applaud the child whose parents taught her not to respond to the ignorance of others and gave her the strength to do so!
Anyone who was taught to read and use a dictionary can look that word up. It means, "ignorant person." Not red person, yellow person, black person or white person, just person.
I'm angry that we still have to debate these things. Our past is what teaches us to be better people. You should be allowed to study the past so that you can learn from it.
It's sad that a high school student knows this when so many adults walk around with this stupidity stuck there in their heads.
"Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it." Thank you, Pawpaw, for teaching me that.
