Published: February 9, 2009

On Feb. 21 and 22 a clean up project will take place on Lake Norman State Park's Itusi Trail.
The Itusi Trail is a 13 mile trail that winds the park and is used by cyclists, hikers and trail runners.

The trail has been built over course of the past eight years with numerous volunteers who, together, have put in more than 6,500 hours of work into the clean-up effort. Work on Phase IV of the trail will add close to seven miles to the existing trail system. The new section is located on approximately 160 acres between Lake Norman and Wildlife Road.

First Flight Bicycles, with support from the Tarheel TrailBlazers mountain bike club, will be working on Phase IV on Feb. 21 and 22 . Work will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 22) and 11 a.m. on
Sunday (Feb. 23). The clean-up project will start at the gate on Wildlife Road about 100 feet from the
intersection of Wildlife Road and State Park Road. Tools and expertise will be provided. Those interested in helping are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, work gloves and appropriate clothing for outdoor work. Volunteers are responsible for their own snacks and water. Work will go until 2 p.m. on both days. If the weather permits, bring your bike and enjoy the existing trail after putting in your trail work.
