Officials say the death of a Mooresville High senior has rattled the entire school community.
Seventeen-year-old Christian "Chris" Marques Sloan died unexpectedly Feb. 1 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. School officials still don't know the cause of death, said Michael Serefine, an assistant principal and track coach, who coached Chris for one season.
Running outdoor track and field last spring under Serefine – Chris had also been a member of the Rowan Express Track Team – the coach said he was liked by his teammates and had a great work ethic when it came to the sport.
"He was a good kid for us," Serefine said. "He came out every day and worked hard."
Chris' fellow track team members, added Serefine, were shocked by the news of his death as were many kids within the student body.
"Chris is so young that for any high school student, they don't really see each other as passing away or something like that so when it happens it really opens their eyes to how special life really is," he said.
Throughout the week, guidance counselors have been available for grieving students.
"Chris was a good kid and he'll be missed here at MHS," Serefine said.
Funeral services for Chris will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Christian Church on Webb Road in Salisbury. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Salisbury. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to service.
In memory of Chris, donations can be made to the MHS track team.
