Tommy Yates and Kenneth Riddle tend to be the odd ones out during the holidays.
While they munch on turkey or ham, their family is eating Tofurky and other vegetarian or vegan dishes.
During the holidays, the meal tends to focus mainly on the meat. After all, what are Thanksgiving and Christmas to the rest of us without turkey or ham?
Those who don't eat meat are left with only side items to consume during the holiday feast.
It's hard when everybody has the ham and the turkey, said Fake It owner Jean Coleman.
While vegetarians don't eat meat, vegans will only eat plant products and won't use products derived from animals, such as cow milk.
Vegetarians, such as Chris Bumgarner, have to make do with the macaroni and cheese and potatoes.
Bumgarner said he will usually eat what is on the table, with the exception of the meat and stuffing.
"I've just had green beans and corn before," Coleman said. "You are stuck with a biscuit. Normally, for desserts, I haven't had a vegan alternative. I'm excited."
This year, it became easier for her because she opened up the store in downtown Statesville.
Coleman said a number of people asked her about what the Tofurky meals were like and what else they could purchase for a meatless meal.
Kenneth's wife Krista said her father, Yates and husband are supportive of her and her children's vegetarian habits. They just prefer to eat meat.
In the past, her mother, who is also a vegetarian or her sister, who is a vegan, would prepare something for their main dish.
This Christmas, the men will have no choice. Their family is going to Krista's sister's house at the beach, and she doesn't allow meat.
"I do all the other stuff," said Krista. "We use everything different than other people. The dinner is actually cruelty free, and I think it is healthier."
