More accountability needed for donations to children

Published: December 15, 2009

The foster parents in the program get between $400 and $500 a month from the state and federal government per child in their care. This is from information I have seen in the news.
How many children of workers in Iredell County or laid-off workers will get their children $165 worth of gifts?
1. Do the foster parents have to bring in receipts for the items they purchase?
2. Who, if anyone, is held responsible for what happens to the money that is given?
3. Are there any checks and balances in the system to account for the money?
The Chief of Police of Mooresville got into trouble over a charity program for kids. DSS in Mecklenburg County has been under investigation for almost a year over their Christmas charity for needy children.
When money is involved in a program, sometimes all the money does not go where it is supposed to — to help the ones it is intended for.
I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I feel there should be some type of accountability made to the public by an independent firm or by someone not with DSS.
I have heard that the more children DSS has in its control, the more grants and money DSS gets from the local, state and federal governments.

Military should be focused on defending our homeland
It is bad enough to hear of terrorist attacks in other countries. If you watch the news, or even listen, our own country has been infiltrated.
Our military has been attacked within the confines of its own safe haven. People who claim to be Americans, and have documents to prove so, have turned into enemies — enemies who have been in the U.S. for a long time unnoticed.
The president is sending so many more of our troops to another country — as if enough are not there, and enough have not perished — to teach and defend them, while we are being invaded, right here.
I, as a supporter of the military, never doubt what they can accomplish. I feel, though, that they are being sent away from what they really need to be doing. As the saying goes, when you cannot find something, it is usually right under your nose.

Spirit of holiday greeting, not words, is what matters
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. If you say either of these greetings with sincerity, joy and love in your heart, your purpose will shine through. Listen for the spirit, look into the heart of the greeter and let the words mean to you what you wish them to mean. I do not believe Jesus would be upset by someone sincerely and joyfully uttering the words "Happy Holidays." Should you?
Have a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah or a Happy Kwanza; or to cover them all, I sincerely wish you a warm, safe and joyful Happy Holidays. May 2010 be healthy and meaningful for all!

Spending in Washington is going to destroy America
All I hear is how well the president is doing, but the more I watch how the spending is going up there, the more I wonder.
All the idiots on the Hill are going to spend this nation into a place where no one is going to have anything. But maybe that is what they want, so they can take all our freedoms away.
Everyone needs to open their eyes and keep a close watch on what's really going in Washington with both parties.
