A 37-year-old Statesville man was shot to death late Monday night and a Mooresville man is in custody.

Samuel Bronson Foote, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene on Stallings Lane, a short dead-end road off U.S. Highway 21/N.C. 115 between Troutman and Mooresville.

Michael Eugene Marley, 48, of Stallings Lane, Mooresville, was charged with murder and discharging a weapon into occupied property.

Capt. Darren Campbell of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said the shooting was the result of a confrontation between the two men.

He said that around 11:30 p.m. Monday, Foote came to Marley's residence and said he was looking for someone at the house.

The two men got into an argument, which led to Marley getting a rifle from inside his house and shooting Foote, who was outside, Campbell said.

He said the details are still sketchy on exactly what led to the shooting.

The two men were familiar with each other, he said.

Foote was found inside a vehicle near the house when deputies arrived on the scene.

Campbell said detectives executed a search warrant, and retrieved a rifle from the house.

A second person at the house, Rita Stallings Marley, 45, was cited for possession of Schedule VI and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Campbell said marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in the residence.
An autopsy on Foote was scheduled for Tuesday.

It was the second local shooting death the sheriff's office has investigated in less than a week.

On Thanksgiving Day, Cheryl Dhonyale Davis 41, of Statesville was charged with the shooting death of her boyfriend, Rodney Herron, 47.
