RALEIGH
A government planning agency has won $13 million in federal stimulus money to buy alternative-fuel vehicles and build fueling and charging stations in North Carolina and South Carolina.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday the money will help fund an initiative pushing electric, propane, ethanol and biodiesel vehicles.
The program run by the Triangle J Council of Governments for the Raleigh-Durham region includes agencies and companies in the Carolinas. Many of the new vehicles and stations will be located in the Raleigh-Durham area and operated by government agencies and utility companies.
The U.S. Energy Department said the alternative-energy vehicles will save more than 700,000 gallons of oil a year.
