The U.S. Marine Corps League 1097 of Iredell County made sure the seven new or newly renovated schools in the Iredell-Statesville system had brand new flags flying overhead when classes resumed Tuesday.
Marine Corps League members went to Coddle Creek, Cloverleaf, Celeste-Henkel, Shepherds and East Iredell elementary schools and Statesville and South Iredell high schools on Tuesday morning to present the new flags and watch as they were raised.
At Statesville High School, Principal Larry Rogers worked around the typical first-day challenges to accept the flag and stand by as JROTC students Khalil Campbell and Gabrielle Terry raised the new flag in front of the school.
After raising the flag, Campbell and Terry, under the watchful eye of their instructor, Sgt. Jimmy Dixson, stood at attention.
Iredell-Statesville Schools Interim Superintendent Brady Johnson was also present.
"This is a mighty nice gesture on your part," Johnson said to Marine Corps League representative Buddy Hemric. "We certainly do appreciate it."
But he wasn't surprised by the Marine Corps League's gesture. "They are a great partner with our school system," he said.
Dennis Clary of the Marine Corps League 1097 said the flags were donated after a discussion about the new schools or those with new construction and the new flag poles at those schools.
Clary said the plan was to contact congressional representatives about getting new flags for the schools, but that would take more than two months.
So the local chapter of the Marine Corps League decided to donate the flags.
Hemric, who helped raise the flag Tuesday at SHS, said it was something the Marine Corps League was glad to do.
