Powerful Statesville Christian looked strong as always in Monday's season-opener.
The Lions were too tough at the top and downed Charlotte Christian 8-1.
Diana Castano won 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 1 court, while Ali Burgiss shook off the rust from a recent knee surgery to win 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 2 court.
Madolyn Essary, Kayla Revelle and Kristin Marchese also won in straight sets for the Lions (1-0).
Burgiss, Castano, Essary and Revelle all won in doubles play as well.
Statesville Christian next plays Hickory, a strong 3A public school, Thursday at home.
