The overdose death of a Monticello student last year and a scare involving two middle school students who abused prescription drugs have prompted a group of local organizations to work toward combating substance abuse.

Communities Caring for Families, an organization consisting of representatives from the Iredell County Department of Social Services, Crossroads Behavioral Healthcare, the judicial system and other agencies, are planning a drug prevention rally from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at North Iredell High School.

"This event is a positive event," said DSS program administrator Lisa York. "It's an event to show the community cares and supports you and we care what happens to you."

During the first hour, participants can meet with representatives of 30 groups and agencies, including Statesville Recreation and Parks Department, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, YMCA of Iredell County, 4-H Club and several churches.

Communities Caring for Families is targeting students from East Middle, North Middle and rising ninth-graders at North High.

"If we can promote anti-drug attitudes and drug-resistant behavior before they find themselves in a situation where they have to make a decision, it will help them," York said.

The keynote speaker will be author Neil Bernstein, who will speak for an hour and conduct a breakout session for parents.

Topics include Internet safety and mentoring.

York said the community's response to the event has been strong. Two laptops were donated to be given away. School supplies will also be handed out.

For those who don't have transportation to the event, buses will be available.

Bus routes will be available at East Middle, North Middle and North High open houses Thursday.

Child care will be provided for children ages 5 to 11.
