Gov. Beverly Perdue sent out a mailing to people serving on North Carolina's boards and commissions thanking them for their leadership. We are sure that was appreciated by those serving. Receiving a thank you for public service, especially volunteer public service, is too rare.

What followed in the governor's letter was something for the citizens of the Tarheel State. It was a reminder of a campaign promise to ensure voters that the government works for them and must be transparent and accountable. She continues by stating her expectation that every state board and commission have a similar commitment to openness and transparency and to comply fully with the State's Open Meetings Act.

Included in the mailing was a two-page question and answer letter on Open Meetings from Attorney General Roy Cooper.

We applaud the governor for setting the expectation of open government. The winner in this is the citizens whose lives and pocketbooks are impacted by the many government bodies that do everything from setting tax rates to drawing school attendance lines to influencing which laws are passed.

Many elected officials are proponents of open government when running for office. To our knowledge, this is the first one who has taken the time to follow up in writing after the election.

The outcome should be a better government for you.
