The sixth annual Good Friday Walk for Peace will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Statesville, beginning at Fifth Street Ministries, 1400 Fifth St. The walk is sponsored by Grace Baptist Church and is a time of reflection on the events surrounding the crucifixion.
The walk lasts about two hours. There are stops along the way where there will be scriptures read, information presented about different community issues and prayers offered. It ends up in an alleyway in downtown Statesville where participants will share in a communion service.
"We grow up hearing about how horrible Good Friday was. This isn't close to being what Jesus went through, but when we walk through town, carrying a big cross, it makes us think about his pain," said Grace youth Lucy Coarsey. "But mostly, it helps us look at where there is pain and hurt in our community. We've been talking about being an answer to our own prayers during Lent and that's what the walk will help us focus on – how we can make a difference."
"The youth started the walk in 2004, but more and more adults have joined in and found the time spent in silence and reflection to be a very powerful way to experience Good Friday," added Gary West, pastor of Grace Baptist. "It is for all ages."
"We call it a walk for peace because whenever people come together to make things better, it is a tremendous step towards peace," he explained.
The public is invited to participate. For more information, call 704-872-5130.
