You can find a taste of the Big Apple at Brooklyn Boys Neighborhood Pizzeria in Mooresville's Morrison Plantation shopping center.
Walking in, customers are greeted by New York memorabilia — old state license plates, subway signs and all things Italian grace the walls. Large windows make the eatery feel open and inviting.
Fast-food classic Italian is how I would describe the feel, as service is mainly do-it-yourself. After placing your order, you seat yourself and then pick up your meal when your name is called. Choices on the menu seem endless, with everything from salad to stromboli.
Kick off your meal with garlic knots, mozzarella sticks or the soup of the day for about $3 each, or go for a lighter meal with their salads, like Greek or Caesar, for $7 to $8.
Brooklyn Boys also serves Stromboli and calzones for around $6, but the heart of the menu is their pizza. By the slice or whole pies, the portions are large and the toppings are numerous.
Gourmet pizzas include the "Veggie" pie, with mushrooms, onions, green peppers, spinach, broccoli and garlic; the "Buffalo Wing" with chicken in their special sauce and cheese; the Fiesta, with jalapenos, black olives, pepperoni and mushrooms; or the Hawaiian Luau, with ham, pineapple, bacon and caramelized onions. Most of the pies run about $17.50, but you can also order the stuffed pizzas, like the chicken or the lasagna, for $23. By the slice, the pizzas range from $1.75 to $3.50, with the option of creating your own.
I felt like pasta the day I ate at Brooklyn Boys, so I choose the Stuffed Shells, with came with four jumbo shells stuffed with ricotta cheese, tomato sauce and mozzarella on top. The portion was perfect, and the plate came out steaming hot. The dish also comes with fresh bread for $9.
Other pasta choices include lasagna, baked ziti, tortellini, chicken or eggplant parmigiana, stuffed penne with ricotta and the "Promenade Sampler," which has ravioli, manicotti and a stuffed shell.
Prices run from $8 to $10. You can also mix and match pasta with a sauce for about the same price.
The restaurant is kid-friendly, serving popular choices for about $4-$5. Your children can pick ravioli in the shape of fish, stuffed shells or mix and match pasta and sauce, satisfying even the pickiest eater.
To top of the meal, choose between the small or large cannoli for under $3 or an Italian Ice in chocolate, cherry, rainbow or lemon for $1.75.
