Kim Coleman brings Christian comedy to Cornelius

Christians and comedy might not go together in the minds of some Lake Norman residents, but Kim Coleman is determined to prove them wrong. She's been making audiences laugh for five years, and this comedian has no problem making jokes that reference the Bible.

"I like to say that Adam and Eve were the first blind date," she said with a laugh, explaining what people could expect from her routine. "I also kid about Noah's wife and the ark, and what it must have been like fixing dinner and not using either of the chickens."

Coleman started off teaching theater and performing in commercials, but a few years ago, she was hired by a Christian theater group in Texas and was bitten by the comedic bug.

"About that time, I started to go back to church and was asked to write several small pieces for the Women's Ministry to be performed by others," she said. "When I did my first solo piece, it just grew from there and I decided to continue with it."

She mentioned that in high school, she and her brother had discussed how improvisation could be fun, but at the time, she thought there was no way she'd be brave enough to perform by herself.

"I guess that was almost a glimmer into my future," she exclaimed. "I just wasn't ready for it then."

Coleman is certainly ready for it now, having toured the country and performed at many church retreats and organizations. In between church gigs, she has appeared at the Foursquare National Women's Gathering in Atlanta and the North Texas District Regional Conference entitled, "High Heels in High Places."

She also participates in a morning radio spot on Joy FM called "Laughter 4 Life" five days a week.
When asked why she chose clean comedy, she said it was because she wanted her daughters to be able to come to her shows and get whole families to laugh together.

"I think it takes work to be funny, and using crude language is the easy way out," she said. "I think of the people I loved to watch perform, like Erma Bombeck and Carol Burnett, and their writing was so brilliant. I want to be like them. I recently introduced my girls to Abbott and Costello and they love it … good writing is timeless."

Breaking down misconceptions is another thing Coleman loves to do.

"For some reason, Christians are viewed as killjoys and people act as if we don't like to laugh and have fun," she said. "God created laughter, so that's just ludicrous. I love touching people this way. You don't know what the audience is going through on a daily basis and I'm proud when so many people come up to me after a show and say, 'Thanks, I really needed that laugh today.' "

Coleman wants to make people chuckle at the upcoming shoot of her new DVD titled, "In The Beginning," on Oct. 4.

"I'm going to be bringing my friend, Gwen Smith, a Christian artist with a new CD and who will be performing new material and Carol Davis, the morning host from 106.9," Coleman said. "Carol will be the MC and it should be a really fun night for everyone."

The event, which is open to the public, will be held at Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius at 7 p.m. Coleman stresses there is limited seating.

"There's about 260 available total, and I'm encouraging people to get their tickets ASAP, because I can't guarantee what will be left," she said.
