"So what are you going to be for Halloween?" my daughter asked me.
"A witch. Mommy's always a witch," her brother matter-of-factly interjected.
"That's not true!" I pleaded. "Okay, maybe some days I'm crankier than usual and my face has more wrinkles. But I'm not always a witch!"
Oops, I forgot we're talking about costumes, not personalities. But did you ever wonder what you'd be wearing on Halloween night if your costume did reflect your personality? Mine wouldn't require any accessories. I'd dress as …
The Creature of Habit (insert scary music here.)
Every year I'm a witch because I have a witch's hat. My Halloween decorations are displayed in my house and yard in the same places as last year, because, well, that's where they were the year before. I've been following the same recipes for 10 years with no intentions of adding or deleting any ingredients. My lipstick shades consistently bounce between the usual brown and rose hues.
Each spring my sister and I e-mail pictures of hairdos we think the other should try. She's worn almost every length under the sun and most colors of the rainbow. I walk into the hair salon, arms overflowing with pictures, only to walk out with a trim.
My defense is "Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" But when your son, who's only been on this planet for six years, can already identify your Halloween habits, things might be slightly broken.
A costume idea that's the antithesis of me would be easy. An appendix. You know, the organ that serves no purpose, has no reason for existence and basically takes up space. I've seen the effects of me leaving town for a few days. My existence is absolutely necessary around here.
I'd love to be a clone. Not one of the characters from "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," but a clone of myself. Imagine the tasks accomplished with hundreds of me around! But actually that's not a Halloween costume idea, it's a wish I mumble on a daily basis.
This year I'm stirring things up and not dressing as a witch. But breaking the Creature of Habit's routines must be done in baby steps, so I've got to dress as something I can identify with. A costume complimented by two kids running wildly away from me, not listening to my screams of "SLOW DOWN! WALK! WAIT FOR ME!"
I'll go as a mummy.
