Well the kids are in school and the new year is upon us. I'd like to share my experience with all who will listen. Last year a teacher told us she believed our son was ADHD and thought he would do better if put on medication.
Not wanting to be labeled as parents who are not cooperative, we took our son to his doctor and told him what the teacher said. He was given the lowest dose of Concerta to see if that would help. After three weeks of taking it, he developed a tick, which consisted of jerking his head, and a humming outburst which later developed into a yell about every 30 seconds. We then took him to the hospital, where we were advised that "with some kids that is a side effect and will last for one to three months."
We also took him to a specialist and was told he is not ADHD, but very intelligent and more than likely bored by the afternoon. As for the ticks, yes they did go away after three long months. A friend of the family did some research on Tourette syndrome, which were the symptoms of the reactions from the medication and found a vitamin regimen that reduced the symptoms.
What did we learn and want the public to know?
1.) Teachers are teachers; they are not doctors and should teach because they love children;
2.) Think twice before you put your child on any type of medication; and
3.) Vitamins are very effective in treating neurological conditions and should be the first thing to try before getting a prescription for a medication.
It's simple vitamins such as vitamin E, D, C, B complex, niacin and taurine. It just makes sense because these vitamins support brain function and they work. Trust us. It will break your heart to see your child twitching and yelling all day long every 30 seconds, not to mention other kids making fun of them. We are very thankful he is back to normal now.
It opened our eyes to many things, such as medications are not always the answer; how precious our children are; and how we take their health for granted; what life is like for someone with Tourette syndrome and how they feel and cope, and how their families cope. Our heart goes out to them.
On a positive note, our youngest son is doing very well. He is a very happy third- grader who loves school and his teacher and surroundings. This has truly been an ordeal and a tremendous wake up.
