On Saturday, Oct. 18, St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church of Mooresville will have its second annual gala and silent auction. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at the Michael Waltrip Raceworld facility in Cornelius.
The proceeds will benefit the church's building fund. Currently, the church leases a space in an industrial building in Talbert Park in Mooresville. The church has already acquired a plot of land to build on in Troutman and look forward to building there as soon as they are able to financially.
Tickets to the event are $75 each and include two drink tickets, which can be used for wine or beer. Those who are interested in attending can purchase tickets by contacting the church office at (704) 660-6915 or P.O. Box 1513, Mooresville, NC 28115.
Cocktails and appetizers featuring Spanakopita, shrimp kabobs, stuffed grape leaves and pork tenderloin meatballs will be served at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will follow at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Greek salad, orzo salad, Greek breads, lemon roasted potatoes, Mediterranean green beans, stuffed chicken breast with feta cheese, kalamata olives and rosemary, mousaka, baked ziti and a carving station.
The evening's festivities will include dancing to both American and ethnic music, as well as a silent auction with a variety of items. "With a diverse community, we expect diverse items," gala chairman Richard Pappas said.
Last year, the auction included such items as old-fashioned popcorn machines, various professional autographed sports memorabilia, U2 concert tickets and many restaurant vouchers. The church is currently seeking items for the silent auction and high end prizes for the raffle.
Two hundred and fifty tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Last year, 150 tickets were available and the event sold out.
All denominations can attend the gala and auction. Pappas said, "All people are welcome to support the church and our community and attend the Gala. This event is not religious; however, we will have some diverse ethnic themes related to the cuisine and music. Anyone who enjoys a great party will want to attend."
Sponsorships of various levels are also available for businesses. Personalized and shared banners, logo and name display on all auction tables, free event tickets and exposure in the event program are some of the benefits offered depending on the sponsorship level.

Pappas guarantees attendees will have a great time.
"If you have ever attended a Greek festival and enjoyed the food and music, you will enjoy this event," Pappas said.
