Starting this winter, some unique classes will be available through the Mitchell Community College Continuing Education Division.
"We're really excited about the Zumba class we're going to start," said Bev Hedrick, the occupational extension director for MCC Continuing Education. "It's an exercise class with Latin music that's really fast-paced and upbeat."
The class starts Jan. 8 and runs through Feb. 12, meeting every Thursday from 6-7 p.m., for $30.
If a slower-paced dance class is more your style, a basic ballroom dancing class will teach the waltz and the rumba each Wednesday from March 4 to April 29, meeting from 6:30-7:30 p.m., for $40.
"We will also offer a truffles class, with one session being held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, and another separate class offered on May 6," she said. "All the cooking supplies are included, and the only thing you need to bring is a cookie sheet or box to bring your truffles home in." The sessions are from 6-8:30 p.m. and cost $20.
For the more adventurous type, a Discover Scuba class meeting at the YMCA could be just the thing.
"It's for two sessions; it's taught by a certified scuba instructor," Hedrick said. "You'll learn the basics."
There are two chances to participate — once on Feb. 16 and 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and on April 20 and 27 at the same time. The cost is $85, and there's a limit of eight in each class, so it's best to register early.
Registration begins Dec. 1.
Class schedules are available online by going to the Mitchell Community College Web site — www.mitchellcc.edu — and clicking on Continuing Education.
As for which classes might fill up first, Hedrick said they never know.
"The craziest classes, like one we're offering on learning to be a clown, are the ones you think no one will take and they're the ones that fill up first," she said with a laugh.
