With the way he has turned around the Statesville football program, head coach Randall Gusler is a popular man at Greyhound Hollow.
But it seems no one holds the third-year coach in higher regard than senior quarterback T.J. McCombs.
"Thank God for Coach Gusler," McCombs said after the Greyhounds' season-ending loss to West Rowan on Friday. "I've been a three-year starter. We started out 2-9, then my junior year, second round of the playoffs, now my senior, second round of the playoffs. That's a great man right there."
Statesville went 0-11 in 2005 under coach Tony Paroli. Gusler returned in 2006 to take over the program he served for many years as an assistant, and after a 2-9 campaign his first year, the Greyhounds have recorded consecutive 9-4 records.
