I was disappointed to read that the Statesville City Council voted down a plan to build a sidewalk to the new Boys & Girls Club.
I can only assume that they are not concerned about the safety of the children who will walk to this new facility. But it is more likely that they would rather have sidewalks to the new city rec center.
I only hope that I don't read in this paper one morning that a child was hit by a car as while trying to get to or return home from the Boys & Girls Club.
I agree that we have to watch the money we spend and be responsible for the reserves that have been built up, but I don't agree with not protecting the future of our city. All streets need to have sidewalks for the safety of all. Look at the streets by Statesville Middle School. The absence of sidewalks means students walk in the streets.
Before we start looking to improve Shelton Avenue, we need to look at the whole city and stop having sidewalks that go nowhere or don't exist. Let's become a city that impresses people with a vision of caring for the citizens. A gateway on Highway 115 is nice, but it would be a small price to have a sidewalk gateway to lead people to the new Boys & Girls Club, a community-backed achievement.
