News that three North Iredell Middle School students are facing criminal charges for handing out pills at school should serve as a wake-up call for parents around the county.

Your kids are not too young to know about drugs.

Your kids are not too young to have access to drugs.

Many of the drugs kids abuse can be easily found right at home, in an unlocked and unchecked medicine cabinet or in mom's purse.

Parents, there is no better time than right now to have an age-appropriate and honest discussion with your children about what drugs are - both street and prescription drugs - and what the risks of experimenting with them can be.

Give your kids practical advice about how to say no if someone offers them drugs and reassurance that they can come to you with questions.

It may be a cliche, but it's true: If you're not talking to your kids about this very real problem, someone else definitely will.
