The vast majority of members who comprise this year's North Iredell boys basketball team either didn't start or didn't see major minutes last season.
The Raiders lost key cogs to graduation, a couple transferred, and two frontcourt athletes are nursing knee injuries they endured playing football.
Disheartening, yes, but coach Tony Davenport is not dismayed.
"They're out there working really hard," Davenport said. "The kids are buying into what we're trying to do, and we may surprise some people."
Interior presences Ryan Sharpe and Thomas Stuckey are the walking wounded. Davenport said a best-case scenario likely has Stuckey returning around Christmas.
Sharpe could be ready for Wednesday's season-opener against South Iredell, but Davenport hesitates rushing to insert him into the lineup.
"We're going to need him down the stretch," Davenport said.
Colt Pierce, a 6-foot-5 defensive-minded post player, could see a lot of action in the absence of Sharpe and Stuckey.
