The Mooresville Graded School District is building a new elementary school on Rocky River Road and is seeking the public's help to name it.
With construction still continuing toward the July 2009 completion of MGSD's third elementary – which will welcome students in the 2009-10 school year – district officials are inviting any and all suggestions for the school's name.
In October, Supt. Mark Edwards said district officials will have to wait and see what type of input they receive before ultimately selecting a name. The MGSD plans to generate a list of three-to-five potential names, dwindled from community suggestions, that the superintendent and board of education will choose from.
"The one thing I have heard consistently is we would be better served by not having another school with 'Mooresville' in the name," said Edwards, noting four schools within the MGSD already display the town's name.
He added, "Part of the excitement is engaging the community to get ideas."
Anyone wishing to send in a name for consideration, visit the MGSD's Web site at www.mgsd.k12.us and email district spokesperson Dreisa Sherrill by Dec. 1.
MGSD officials, including the school board, will discuss the new elementary school's name and present redistricting plans during a public meeting on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Mooresville High School auditorium.
Redistricting progress
At the monthly MGSD school board meeting on Nov. 13, district officials updated the board and audience on the redistricting process, which is beginning to take shape and become ready for public discussion.
Director of Operations Stephen Mauney told the board that an initial plan for redistricting was developed on Nov. 10 with the Urban Institute out of UNCC and following community commentary during the public meeting scheduled for early December, additional changes will be made to the plans.
"We're well underway in the redistricting process," Mauney said.
Utilizing the community's input, a revised plan should be presented to the board of education in January – or February if additional revisions are necessary – with possible approval anticipated from the board the following month, noted Mauney.
Edwards mentioned the efforts required for adequately redistricting the MGSD.
"It's not just about drawing lines," he said. "There's a lot of detail."
Looking at school capacity, transportation issues, predicted growth, neighboring communities and even considering school choice – families may have the option to choose which elementary or intermediate school their child attends provided the parent can supply transportation – Edwards said only minor adjustments are expected at the intermediate school level with more major changes to distribute students among three elementary schools.
He added, "It's an important public process."
The next MGSD Board of Education meeting will be held at Town Hall on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.
