Taking care of animals is something 16-year-old Kaitlyn Ferguson hopes to make a career out of someday.
While being a veterinarian is a few years away, the Lake Norman High School student is already doing what she can.
On Saturday, Ferguson and two of her cross-country teammates, Brandi Clark, 17, and Casey Grieshaber, 17, arrived at the Humane Society of Iredell's new facility on Robinson Road carrying a $700 check and a trunkload of dog and cat food, toys and treats.
"We are so grateful," said HSI executive director Juli Reed. "The money you collected will help with so many things we do, like our spay/neuter program."
Ferguson said she wants to be a vet in a few years, but wanted to do what she could now to help animals.
Last summer, with some help from family and friends, Ferguson began organizing a 5K run to raise money for the Humane Society.
She recruited some athletes from Brawley Middle School and from The Point community on Brawley School Road, and on Saturday, staged the Furry Friends 5K run.
Ferguson said the entry fee was $15 with all proceeds going to the Humane Society. "And they had to bring a pet supply," she said.
In the end, the teens cleared $700 and several bags of dog and cat food, bags of pet toys and even a pet carrier.
Reed said all these items will be vital in helping the Humane Society with its mission of saving and adopting companion animals.
The bags of food, the treats, kitty litter and toys will all go to those fostering dogs and cats for the Humane Society.
Ferguson, Grieshaber and Clark are cross-country runners at Lake Norman as well as soccer players, but they didn't run in the 5K Saturday.
Instead, the three were organizers and cheerleaders for those who did run.
Ferguson said she was pleased with the amount of money and the number of pet supplies the event raised, especially since the 5K was not put on by a large group.
"This was kind of a loosely organized group," she said.
Normally low key, Reed was overjoyed with what the young ladies accomplished.
"You guys are awesome," she said as she looked at the check. "Thank you so much. You are wonderful."
