Saturday was a great day for music. The first annual Rock the House with the Mouse Battle of the Bands was held at Hickory Dickory Dock.

The weather was beautiful. The music was out of this world, and the Dock was jumping.

The five bands that performed submitted videos to the online portion of the contest. The videos received votes online. The Pheew, Beauty Above the Thorns, Necro Bomb and The Reaction were the finalists. Gates of Assyria had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict.

The Pheew was the first band to take the stage. This band of two guitarists and a guest drummer played electric versions of their original acoustic song list. They played music ranging from jazz to heavy metal. The group have great personalities and meshed well with the crowd. I am looking forward to hearing more from them in the future.

Beauty Above the Thorns was the second band to play. This band was very professional and polished. They demonstrated a high level of showmanship. The music was tight and they delivered a great message about their faith , just as the Pheew did before them.

Necro Bomb, a thrash metal band, followed with a strong set of original songs as well as covers from Rush and Judas Priest. They demonstrated great strings as well as excellent off -meter drum licks. They also demonstrated a high level of professionalism. If you are a true headbanger, this is the band to watch.

The last band, but definitely not the least, was The Reaction. The three piece band is a contemporary Christian rock band. The two vocalists harmonized well together and they also offered a terrific message about their faith. They performed original and cover songs. The best song was their arrangement of "Amazing Grace" at the end of their set.

The judging of these four bands was difficult. They each offered a different genre of music. It came down to the points. The bands were judged on a scale of one to 10 in showmanship, tonality, professionalism, audience appeal, technical ability and appearance.

The winner of this year's Battle of the Bands is Beauty Above the Thorns. They won a grand prize package worth $1 ,200 from Codex Sound, Harrisburg Music, Kelly & Co., Larry's Musical Madness, and Melissa Gibson Photography.
