West Iredell can feel a little better about opening the playoffs next week.

After dropping their last two games, the Warriors will go into the postseason on a high note after thumping the visiting Carson Cougars 42-14 Friday.

"(The win) was real big," Warriors quarterback Quan Rucker said. "We felt like we had been working hard. The team felt like since we lost the other two, this game would be a big one for us for momentum going into the playoffs."

And, as running back Devin Miller pointed out, anything can happen in the playoffs.

"There's no telling (what can happen)," Miller said. "Life throws curveballs. There's really no telling."

West Iredell rode an opportunistic defense and an efficient offense to finish the regular season with a 7-4 mark and go 5-4 in the North Piedmont Conference.

Rucker and Miller handled the bulk of the offensive duties, and the Warriors notched two scores on the defensive side of the ball.

Rucker finished with 118 passing yards and 61 rushing. He threw one touchdown pass and ran for another score. Miller totaled 89 yards and a touchdown.

The Warriors used two defensive scores to jump ahead by 14 points in the first quarter.

Marquis Stevenson returned a Shauwn Warren fumble 25 yards to paydirt with 51 seconds to play in the first quarter.

On the final play of the first quarter, Derrick Murdock picked off a Ryan Jones pass at the Carson 38 and took it to the end zone for a 14-0 Warriors advantage.

The Cougars (3-8, 2-7 NPC) got back in the game when Warren broke a 7-yard run to the end zone, but West Iredell answered quickly.

Miller burst through the middle of the line for a 4-yard TD run, and P.J. Clyburn gave West Iredell a three-touchdown lead with less than a minute to play in the first half.

Rucker hit Clyburn over the middle, and Clyburn accelerated past the Cougars defense for a 26-yard scoring reception.

The Warriors added two fourth-quarter scores, a 5-yard Rucker run and a 47-yard option keeper by freshman quarterback Sayer Robinson.
