Martha Gamble Hall has worn many hats – mother, professional storyteller, principal, teacher and administrator. Now she can claim another title – author.
A native of Mooresville, Hall has written lots of poetry, but this is her first published book. A children's book set at Christmas time is entitled, "A Note From Santa" and is targeted to elementary age children, not only entertaining, but teaching a lesson for all ages in honesty, obedience and doing what is right.
The love of stories began at an early age for Hall as she and her brother used to sit around her mother's chair and listen to her tell stories.
Her mother used them especially to quiet their fears during bad thunderstorms. In addition to listening to her mother, she gained the idea of writing her book from past Christmas stories, her own imagination and a compilation of what she has learned through the years working in the school system.
This particular story became a part of Hall's Christmas storytelling agenda. One Tuesday morning at a breakfast forum, each person was asked what he or she wanted to perform for this special Christmas party. She decided to tell this story, which the adults seemed to really enjoy; therefore, she decided that children would enjoy it too. Thus, in 1997, "A Note From Santa" was born.
More children's books may be in her future, depending on if she has ideas for more. Like most writers she shared that she writes her story ideas on whatever is handy at the time.
Hall does enjoy entertaining she noted, but "being a teacher at heart, I do have that teaching moment when I tell the story. I think this one is a good story for age four through elementary," she shared. "It gives parents a chance to read to their children, which means more than just gift giving. I want children and parents to remember the story and the moral."
Raised in Mooresville, Hall attended school in Mooresville and on to Johnson C. Smith University. She received her Master's degree from the University of Maryland and her Principal's certification from Clemson University. Currently, living in Charlotte, Hall still has close ties to Mooresville with lots of family in the area, and she teaches English and writing at the Mitchell Community College Mooresville campus. She has two sons, Morris Jr. of Charleston and Antar of New York.
"A Note From Santa" is available for purchase from the author, and she may be contact at 704-971-5383. And, according to her publisher, Barnes and Noble will have access to the book by Nov. 15 as well as it being on amazon. com and Author house.com by that same date.
Hall would love to share her talents of storytelling and tell about her new book with area organizations. She has performed before PTA groups, for lots of children and parents, and for a crowd as large 3000. Therefore, those who would like to have her come and speak are encouraged to contact her at the same number.
