"You have my promise," Foxx said in an e-mail to her supporters that was released to the media, "that I will continue to work hard to fix a broken Washington and to reform the old, worn out Washington way of thinking."

Despite being out-campaigned in Iredell County, Foxx won the vote here by a margin of about 56 percent to 44 percent, which was inside the presidential margin of 62 percent to 37 percent.

Foxx, who won in 11 of the 12 counties in the 5th District and won the race by a margin of 58 percent to 42 percent (188,153 to 134,567), expressed gratitude to her constituents for carrying the day.

"I would again like to thank all my supporters who considered my record of reform and my commitment to service and gave me two more years in Congress," she said in her e-mail. "I promise you a strong voice for North Carolina values in Washington."

Carter, a former high school teacher and football coach from Ashe County, took his lone victory in Watauga, which is Foxx's home county.
"The numbers don't lie and we have elections to decide winners and losers," Carter said. "And even though the numbers say I lost this election, I feel like I'm a winner in other ways because of all the great people I've met during this campaign."
Carter said that while the run for office was an enriching experience, he will welcome the time off the campaign trail.
"I just retired in January from a long career," he said. "And I haven't been able to really enjoy my retirement. This was great and I don't regret a mile I traveled, a word I said or a dollar I spent, but I have two grandchildren and a wood shop and a lot of catching up to do."
